In our last update we reported that BGC were aiming to have the bulk excavation of the basement completed prior to the Christmas break. Unfortunately, as BGC got towards the lower levels of the basement they encountered limestone which has caused some delays.
During the development’s design stage, a geotechnical report was commissioned and the presence of limestone was identified. So whilst the limestone was not a surprise the extent of it was. The limestone can be dug out, but as a rock breaker (essentially a very large jackhammer) is needed to be used to break up the limestone first before it then can be removed, it does dramatically slow the process.
As a result of hitting the limestone BGC have re-sequenced their works slightly and have already installed the crane base and erected the crane tower. The early erection of the crane will hopefully assist BGC in making up some of the time which has been lost due to the limestone.
The focus for February will be to excavate, form and pour all of the building’s footings and rafts.
